What Causes Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)? – Manipal Hospital

The video describes a lung disease known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) where the body slowly loses the ability to breathe. The video begins with the structure of the lungs beginning from the bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli with capillaries surrounding them. The process of breathing is then explained with the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood vessels and the alveoli. The normal functioning of the alveoli and the lungs is spongy and elastic. The causes of COPD include smoking, pollution and dust. Emphysema is one of the indicators of the condition and is where elasticity is lost in the alveoli and lungs, with symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. Chronic bronchitis is the other indicator of the condition and is where damage in airways causes them to swell and thicken, while also producing mucus. The body develops a persistent cough to get rid of mucus and is symptomized by a mucosal cough, shortness breath and respiratory disease including obstructive lung disease. The treatment of COPD is then discussed such as use of antibiotics, oxygen therapy, avoiding smoking and surgery to remove non-functional air sacs. A discussion of precautions to take to prevent COPD ends the video.
